“Brand New Key” is a varied jazz collection of tunes - some standards, some not-so standards, and several songs that deserve to be standards. It celebrates the discoveries Mr. Gimble has made as a vocalist over the years, calls attention to a few musical gems that deserve more broad recognition, and explores his passion for the grooves and sounds of the 60s and 70s. This recording also marks the first time Jeffrey’s been able to go into the studio with pianist/composer/producer Josh Nelson, a brilliant collaborator and cohort.
About Jeffrey Gimble.
Jeffrey grew up in a jazz-filled home in Houston, TX in the 60s and 70s. Whether accompanying his bandleader dad Maynard to gigs, spending endless hours listening to his family’s vast jazz record collection, or just playing piano and singing, his musical destiny was fixed at an early age. It was then that he discovered the Great American Songbook as well as the works of the American Musical Theatre (Sondheim in particular).
After spending 20 years in New York City as an actor working in plays, musicals and films, he moved to Los Angeles saying “I’m probably the only professional actor to move to L.A., stop acting and start singing jazz instead.”
His newest recording “Brand New Key” (2025) celebrates songs from the 60s and 70s reimagined for a modern jazz sensibility, as well as a handful of rare standards and bossas. Produced & featuring piano by Josh Nelson alongside noted guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist Dan Lutz and drummer Dan Schnelle, the recording made Lance Liddle’s top 10 Vocal Albums of 2025 & received a three star Downbeat review.
His first recording “Beyond Up High” (2013) produced by Mark Winkler with piano and arrangements by Tamir Hendelman was called “An auspicious debut jazz album” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer), “One of the best for 2013” (Critical Jazz) and “A new male voice terrific in style, swing and swagger” (All About Jazz).
Mr. Gimble gigs primarily in the Southern California area, with performances at Catalina Jazz Club, Jazz at the G Spot, Club 1881, Feinstein’s at Vitello’s, The Merc (Temecula), Urban Press Winery, the West Hollywood Summer Sounds series, Vicky’s of Santa Fe, the La Quinta Museum, the Gardenia and the LAX Radisson’s “Jazz at the RAD” series, to name a few. His mentor is vocalist/educator Kate McGarry. He keeps singing because “it’s the absolute quickest way I know to get and give joy in this life.”
